Southern Water Case Study

Kevan Mossman led Southern Water through a business change programme following their acquisition by Scottish Power.  Southern Water supply drinking water to more than one million households and treat and recycle wastewater from nearly two million households across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.  Vizone were responsible for setting the strategy and implementing the £85m root and branch second wave 'Way Ahead' business change programme that delivered new systems and communication networks including; virtual digital communications, work management and despatching, EDMS, GIS, procurement, financials, customer management, HR and ICA.

Vizone’s objective was to:

  • Grow core-related business to enhance shareholder value.
  • Achieve a clear and demonstrable industry wide lead in operational efficiency within 3 years.
  • Deliver commercially led customer service standards at maximum levels of efficiency.
  • Establish the most effective mechanism to deliver the likely regulatory review programme.
  • Minimise lifetime costs associated with all investment and maintenance programmes.
  • Optimise and rationalise the Southern Water structure and all support functions.
  • Exploit synergies within the Scottish Power Group.
  • Map out the role of Southern Water in meeting Scottish Power's multi-utility strategy.
  • Define acquisition and growth strategies to further enhance shareholder value.

The programme successfully moved Southern Water from tenth position to first position in the regulatory league tables published by OFWAT in December 2001.
