British Energy Case Study

A FTSE 100 company, British Energy Group plc is the UK’s largest producer of electricity and the lowest carbon emitter of the major UK electricity generators.  With a dedicated workforce of about 6,000 skilled professionals, they produce around one-sixth of the nation's electricity.  British Energy had serious operating problems and their shares were suspended whilst a Business Transformation Consortia (BTC) was brought in to radically overhaul their organisation to improve dramatically their operational performance levels.

Vizone were employed directly by the BTC to deliver the transformation as well as improve the operation of all of its UK nuclear power stations.

Vizone led a team within the transformation consortium to:

  • Deliver a full Healthcheck review and transformation plan for the British Energy IS and Asset Management functions to deliver the necessary changes to meet the business transition requirements.
  • Produce the transition action plans to transform the IS department.
  • Re-negotiate sub contractor agreements and deliver an information management strategy.

In order to achieve this Vizone led several tasks that included:

  • Overall programme management to define and deliver the information requirements for the relisting and business improvement programme.
  • Defining the IT delivery programme within the Asset Management and Capital Investment Programme.
  • Aligning the IS strategy with the broader business change programme
  • Reviewing the internal IT service and strategy, to validate its capability to support the Asset Management & Capital Investment Programme.
  • Definition of the risk management process and supporting risk systems within British Energy including the development and coordination of the business programme to integrate the process (and systems) within the British Energy business and necessary stakeholders.
  • Review and evaluation of the British Energy Information Services department and Information Strategy to validate its capability to support the Asset Management & Capital Investment Programme.
  • Design of the Information Strategy required and development and coordination of the programme to implement the strategy over the next 5 years to support the Capital Investment programme being implemented within British Energy.

Due to our performance and success on this programme British Energy directly contacted Vizone to utilise our experts on another programme to define, design and rapidly implement new mission critical business improvement systems.

Vizone was employed to define, design and rapidly implement new mission critical business improvement programmes for the the capital programme delivery process, and a new IS strategy in time for the re-listing of BE to help the company adapt to the increasing competition in the privatised electricity industry.  The Vizone Programme Manager successfully achieved this by:

  • Undertaking business process definition and documentation for all British Energy Asset Management and Capital Programme delivery areas.
  • Reviewing the internal IT service and strategy to validate its capability to support the Asset Management & Capital Investment Programme.
  • Defining the information and data sets for all processes.
  • Delivering traditional and Rapid Application Development (RAD) systems for Capital programme management, Risk management, and Asset Register and work management.
  • Defining and aligning the new IS strategy and organisational requirements for the British Energy broader business change programme to meet their new 5 year objectives.
